RESIDENTS have been evacuated from their homes after a fire at a flat near the centre of Helensburgh.

One person is understood to have been taken to hospital after the blaze at a property in East King Street in the early hours of Friday.

Local resident Edward Matheson, who was evacuated from his home in a neighbouring block of flats in the street, told the Advertiser: "The fire started at 3am and quickly spread to other flats.

"Residents had to be evacuated on to neighbouring streets.

"Thankfully all residents were taken out safely. We were allowed back in just after 4am."

Nearby Grant Street was closed for a spell, shutting off access to the car park next to the town's Co-operative supermarket and Helensburgh Medical Practice, but a police spokesman said the road had since reopened.
