HELENSBURGH Golf Club held its Club Championship finals day at the weekend - and despite the weather, it was a great finale.

Peter Haggarty retained the gents’ championship title with magnificent striking and distance control on what were very tricky and windy conditions.

It was the 11th time he has lifted the trophy. Young Shey Donald competed well but could not deal with Peter’s consistent play, and suffered setbacks due to poor drives at three of the later holes.

That gave Peter a handsome lead which he then extended in the afternoon session to claim the honours yet again.

Meanwhile, the junior boys’ championship certainly suggests that the future of the club is promising. Tom Barton claimed the title with a 5&4 victory over Ben Armstrong, but both are showing themselves to be real prospects.

In the ladies’ championship event, the wind and rain also made play very difficult, but Gemma Canham and Sarah Kemp stuck in there and played out a fine battle.

Gemma eventually gained an advantage in the early stages of the back nine holes and ran out winner by 4&2.

The higher handicap players played their own championships in the afternoon. The Peel Trophy for 10-18 handicappers saw Ian Porter win by 3&2 against Graham Crowhurst, while the 1963 Trophy for 18+ handicappers was won by Alan Walker, who was pushed all the way to the last hole by Stephen Ford.

In the qualifying competitions, the leading qualifiers in the three handicap categories were Simon Barras, Stuart Latimer and Ian Harrington.

Meanwhile, in Saturday’s round of the BMW, Michael Stephen won with 1 birdie and 5 pars, posting 41 points to Gordon McGregor and Steven O’Brien’s 38 each.

In the Ormond Medal played on Wednesday, August 8, Dominic Taylor won Division 1, going out in 35 and coming back in the same number, beating Shey Donald by four shots.

Alan Bell won Division 2, going out in 36 and coming back in 43, beating Dereck West by 2 shots. Division 3 winner was Bill McKeirnan, going out in 44 and coming back in 51, beating Scott Kennedy by one shot.

The McIntyre Seniors had a 3-1 home win over Douglas Park last Thursday, while in the Tuesday evening eclectic, A Drysdale and Jim McKenzie won with 23 points.

The twos winner this week is J McKenzie, whose two came at the third hole, while Scott Kennedy now tops the eclectic leader board with 36 points, followed by Ray Smith, Stuart Buchanan, Kenny Loch, Jim McKenzie and Dave Lutwyche, all on 33.
