HELENSBURGH stone skimmer Alex Lewis smashed the All England Open Stone Skimming Championships record on his way to winning the title for the first time.
Alex, 21, threw a winning distance of 95 metres at National Trust Fell Foot Park on Windermere on Saturday – seven metres more than the previous record which had won the 2017 event for Welshman Gareth Twamley, and no fewer than 12 metres ahead of his nearest challenger at Saturday's event.
Julius Barratt from the event's organisers, the South Cumbria Rivers Trust, said: “We never imagined we would be celebrating our 10th anniversary with such an amazing demonstration of power and skill and a record of such an incredible distance.
"Last year’s record-setting win in the men’s contest seemed remarkable, but to exceed it by seven metres is quite something.
“We are sure we will be seeing Alex win more championships in years to come."
