Helensburgh's MP has sent a message of "support and solidarity" to the people of Ukraine fighting back against Russia's invasion.

Brendan O'Hara put the message in a parliamentary book being sent to the chairman of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkovna Rada.

He said the people of Ukraine had the "full and unwavering support" of residents across Argyll and Bute as they defended their country from the invasion. And he said that support would continue until Russian president Vladimir Putin withdrew from Ukraine.

Mr O'Hara has been a vocal critic of both Putin and the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, who has played host to invading troops.

But he also questioned why the UK was not doing enough to help Ukrainian refugees, who now number more than two million in the largest refugee crisis Europe has seen in decades.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by video link to the House of Commons and was given a standing ovation by MPs.

Mr O'Hara said: “The UK Government must immediately waive all visa requirements and make emergency provisions for Ukrainian families to come here without having to fill out complex paperwork.

"Our allies across the EU have taken the lead in welcoming and supporting those displaced by the Russian invasion – yet to date, the UK has only allowed 50 Ukrainian refugees to come here. It is an absolute disgrace.”
