Craighelen Lawn Tennis and Squash Club were recently recognised with the ‘Club of the Year’ award by West of Scotland Squash for 2021/22.

The accolade followed a season where the Craighelen men’s first and second teams both won their respective divisions in the West Leagues.

The first team held off a stiff challenge from Scotstoun and Newlands to earn promotion to the second division for next season.

The team was led by newcomer Rob Clarke, posting an impressive 8-2 record in the number one spot, backed up by strong performances from Kieran Martin and Scott Weir, who both earned 13 match wins over the course of the season.

Meanwhile the Craighelen second team flirted with an undefeated season as they comfortably won their division, led ably by club veterans Bob Knox, Doug Green and Lee Humphries and supported by newer members such as Alex Ward who joined from the Royal Navy.

The success has continued into the summer with a number of players trying their hand at racketball and emerging victorious in the West of Scotland League’s second division.

At an individual level, Rob Clarke also earned himself a coveted gold T-shirt with victory in the ‘Racketball Around Scotland’ (RASTA) event held at SSRC.

If you are interested in giving squash (or racketball) a go at Craighelen, the club will be running a ‘Try Squash’ session at the club on Saturday, August 6.

This is part of the ‘Love Squash’ week that is being promoted by Scottish Squash to coincide with the Commonwealth Games, where the club hopes people be inspired by watching some of the best players in the world.
