After a two year, Covid-induced hiatus, Lomond School brought its senior school show back with a bang.

Based on Roald Dahl’s story and with fabulous songs by Tim Minchin, senior pupils took on the legendary Matilda, the tale of a girl, unloved by her cruel parents, who dreams of a better life.

Matilda took the West End and Broadway by storm, and the Junior version had only very recently been released, and is currently the only version that has ever been made available for schools and amateur productions.

Since the auditions in June, Lomond School pupils and teachers worked tirelessly to ensure the comeback of the senior school show did not disappoint, taking on challenging routines, set changes and lightening set ups which brought the show to life in the school’s amphitheatre style drama studio.

Doug Fleming, head of music, said: “Everyone involved showed extraordinary dedication and commitment to the show and such was the enthusiasm for the production, we performed over four days with a total of five performances from two casts.”

The energetic musical production boasted upbeat ‘all cast’ routines alongside moving solo performances with ambitious scene changes throughout, and both Lomond School casts did this impressively.

Olivia and Skye were captivating in their starring role, wowing the crowds with their singing and determination to challenge the very awful Miss Trunchbull (played terrifyingly well by Romy T and Penny McS).

On hand to offer Matilda kindness and sympathy, school teacher Miss Honey (Ruby C/ Lydia W) and Librarian Mrs Phelps Lucy H/Lucy F) executed their parts with sweetness and light in contrast to the ghastly Wormwoods (Frazer O as Mr Wormwood, Clemmie P and Ida H as Mrs Wormwood and Raffey W as son Michael), whose cruel but quirky characters had the audience in stitches throughout.

And the iconic Bruce Bogtrotter chocolate cake scene was played out brilliantly by both Basil W and Andrew P whose facial expressions were both convincing and hilarious!

Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that two of the principal roles were played by international boarders France and Germany, and pupils from Hong Kong Nigeria and Spain all played key parts in the show.

Lomond School principal Johanna Urquhart said: “I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to the cast and crew of our production of Matilda, in particular Mr Fleming and Mrs McCann for their musical and artistic direction and the many hours they put into bringing this amazing show together.

"Both casts have shown grit, determination, stamina and above all, amazing talent in music and drama, entertaining audiences across five sold out shows. They brought us a truly sensational show and I am sure that like me, their parents and loved ones are extremely proud of them.”
