The 80th anniversary of part of the Second World War's Battle of the Atlantic is to be remembered at a ceremony in Helensburgh this weekend.

A service will be held in St Michael's and All Angels Church, William Street, on Sunday, May 28 followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial in Hermitage Park.

A special focus at the ceremony will be recipients of the Atlantic Star and family members of holders are welcome to participate, either with the relative's medal or a photo or other record.

Organisers hope to have as many Merchant Navy sailors as possible represented on the day.

Winston Churchill once said: "The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war (WW2).

"Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land at sea or in the air, depended ultimately on its outcome."

Helensburgh Advertiser:

The remembrance service will start at the church at 10.30am, following by the wreath laying at 12.15pm.

At 2.30pm, a ceremony will be held at the Rosneath Cairn, adjacent to the sailing club at Rosneath Caravan Site.

All organisations and individuals are welcome to take part.
