Members of a Helensburgh choir met up with a Dunblane choir ahead of their joint 60th anniversary concert next month.

The Helensburgh Oratorio Choir teamed up with the Rosenethe Singers – which was also established 60 years ago – for their first practice together on Sunday, January 21 at the Scottish Opera studios in Glasgow before visiting the Tall Ship in Helensburgh.

The choral work ‘A Sea Symphony’ will be performed jointly by both groups during the show on Sunday, January 18, at the Glasgow City Halls.

Choir member John Beveridge said: “It’s a huge undertaking for us – we’ve never done anything as big as this before.

“We had about 80 to 90 people there [at the rehearsal] and it went quite well – the musical director was pleased with the performance.

“It’s an amazing piece and it’s very evocative of the sea and wind and ships so with all these people on stage it should be quite something to hear.”

The final performance will feature around 150 singers from both choirs and will be conducted by Suzannah Wapshott, with music provided by the Scottish Opera Orchestra.

Written by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, ‘A Sea Symphony’ lasts around 70 minutes and is the composer’s longest-ever work.

The composition was influential for early 20th-century symphonic and choral music in Britain.

Tickets for the show cost £20.16 for adults and £11.20 for those aged under 26.
