The son of a Helensburgh man says he's "really enjoying" touring the UK in his first ever musical production.

Colin Campbell, whose father, also named Colin, lives in the town, is currently in the UK tour of hit musical Calendar GirlS, playing John, a leukaemia patient.

As a long-time fan of musicals, Colin says he has been having a great time finally starring in one.

Colin said: “I loved musicals when I was a kid, like West Side Story and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

“Sitting down on a Sunday afternoon and watching the big musicals was fantastic so to actually be in one is really nice - I’m really enjoying it."

Colin, who grew up in the north of England and started his acting career in 1985, has worked in theatre and television, but had yet to try his hand at a musical production until he joined the Calendar Girls cast.

His first time in a musical has been an experience to remember, and Colin hopes the production can bring joy to west of Scotland theatre-goers when the tour reaches the Kings Theatre in Glasgow from Tuesday, February 20 to Saturday, February 24.

Colin continued: “The show is quite sad at times, but ultimately it’s a really uplifting show.

"Musicals can lift things up and it’s good to give a bit of a boost.

“We’ve had a standing ovation most shows so we’ve been well received wherever we’ve gone.

“I think the show is very relatable for audiences and they’ve usually got some connection with the story, so I think that’s why it speaks to people.”

The tour started in September 2023 in Windsor and will run until Saturday, April 13, when the final shows will be performed in Crawley.

However, with the possibility that the tour may be extended into 2025, Colin is hopeful that he will be able to continue in his role.

He added: “If I’m free, and it was going out again, I would leap at the chance, because I do love doing this show.”

The musical is based on the true story of a group of women in a small Yorkshire Women’s Institute who create a nude calendar to raise money for charity after one of their husbands dies of leukaemia.

The production stars EastEnders’ Laurie Brett, Liz Carney of The Full Monty and The Mousetrap, Maureen Nolan of The Nolan Sisters, Lyn Paul of The New Seekers and Blood Brothers, Hollyoaks’ Helen Pearson, Coronation Street’s Samantha Seager, and Honeysuckle Weeks of Foyle’s War.

Take That’s Gary Barlow and screenwriter Tim Firth wrote the songs and book.
