Four Helensburgh girls are “absolutely thrilled” to be sharing the stage with West End stars during a Glasgow production this weekend.

Lily Dennett, 15, Georgia Dennett, 13, Clemmie Perratt ,16, and Romy Taylor, also 16, will be starring in Movies to Musicals at the SEC Armadillo on Saturday, February 17.

The local quartet will join a cast of 70 young people who will perform with West End stars John Owen-Jones, Sabrina Carter, and Kerry Ellis, classical singer Lucy Kay, opera singer Paul Tabone, and Glasgow’s Rock Choir.

Romy’s mum Lesley said: “The girls are absolutely thrilled to be performing alongside professional musical theatre artists in such a large venue.

“They are so excited and just want to make the most of this opportunity to perform to such a large audience.

“Movies to Musicals, as a group, have such high expectations of their young performers, which really encourages them to perform to the best of their abilities.

“I can see how the skills of hard work, resilience and of course the ability to perform to a large audience, will really stand them in good stead for whichever path they eventually choose in life. The show is going to be electric!

“They have rehearsed and rehearsed and are so ready.”

Movies to Musicals showcases performances of soundtracks from stage and screen.

To celebrate the project’s 10th anniversary, audiences will be treated to songs from a variety of hit musicals such as Bugsy Malone, Mary Poppins, Miss Saigon, Six, and Les Misérables.

Producer Ross Gunning said: “Many of the young people who come to us struggle with confidence, and we’re really proud of the fact we provide a safe and open space for everyone to just be themselves.

“And seeing the growth in some of these kids, watching them become triple-threat dancers, singers, and actors, is what keeps me doing this.

“It’s hard, especially trying to find funding, but I absolutely love it.

“It’s crazy we’re celebrating 10 years – it has gone by so quickly. I’m really proud of what we have achieved.

“No-one else does what we do - we are the company putting Scotland at the forefront of musical theatre.”

Best known for his roles as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, John Owen-Jones last performed with Movies to Musicals in 2019, at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, but will return for the 2024 production.

He said: “I am delighted to be returning to Glasgow once again as the audiences there have always been so fantastic, and it’ll be great to be part of such a special show too."

Movies to Musicals is run by charity Glasgow Philharmonia who have given thousands of children access to free and low-cost performance classes.
