TEMPORARY traffic lights are to remain in place on the A83 near the Rest and Be Thankful after a section of hillside apparently "slumped", say roads bosses.

The measures are in place to facilitate ongoing carriageway drainage works and hillside monitoring and inspection after a new area of movement was found above the trunk road.

A small section of the hillside, located above the roadside retaining wall, appears to have slumped because of the high ground saturation caused by the wet winter weather.

BEAR Scotland, which maintains the route on behalf of Transport Scotland, is conducting regular on-site inspections to monitor the hill for further movement.

BEAR Scotland’s North West representative Ian Stewart said: “The safety of road users is paramount and it is likely that monitoring and inspection of the new area of movement will continue beyond completion of the road drainage works.

“[This will] allow further understanding of the area’s susceptibility to rainfall and saturation.

“This will inform future operational decision making and determine the extent of permanent mitigation to be provided.”

Temporary measures to improve the safety of the A83 have already begun, with hillside spotters monitoring the affected area and workers managing traffic signal operation 24 hours per day.

In addition, a debris barrier is in place at road level.

It's not yet known how long the restrictions will remain in place.
