Helensburgh's new skate park has officially been opened.

Enthusiastic young people were around Helensburgh skate park on the waterfront on Friday afternoon even as it was still being finished.

And by Saturday, it was attracting all ages and all manner of wheels to try it out.

Skateboards, bikes and scooters all tried out the restored space.

Jackie Hood, of Helensburgh Skatepark Project, formally cut a ribbon that afternoon, only briefly interrupting crowds trying out the new ramps.

The park was restored years after the original ramps were removed for the building of Helensburgh Leisure Centre and demolishing of the old building.

Unit 23 in Dumbarton constructed the new ramps and installed Gatorskin surfaces imported from the US to give young people the best possible park.

Chick Mailey, owner of Unit 23, said a number of people had approached them as they rebuilt the skate park welcoming it for youngsters.

And he said even for those who might not go on to be expert skaters or riders, others have gone into careers such as photography from being around skate parks.

"The majority are happy to see something come in," he said. "This is a cracking spot for it.

"I think it will be a good asset. It really does give kids something to do. It's a confidence builder, it's social.

"Helensburgh is seriously lacking on things for young people. A lot of kids don't want to play football or athletics. This is a good form of self-expression.

"I think it will be very well used."

The skate park's previous ramps were put into storage when the site was demolished, but were deemed not fit to be used again.

They had previously been in place for more than a decade and planning permission remains for its current location.

The council had agreed to its return but there have been repeated clashes over moving it elsewhere in the town to allow the land to be sold to an unknown large retailer.

Council officials have currently shortlisted two entries to take over the site, but their bids will remain secret until preferred bidder status is given to one of them, expected in the coming weeks.
