Our latest trip into the Advertiser's archives goes back 15 years to our report of a Helensburgh boy who was backing both Scotland and Wales in the Six Nations Championship at Murrayfield.

Here's how we reported Ieuan Roden's big day at the home of Scottish rugby in the Advertiser's edition of March 15, 2003...

THERE were mixed emotions for one young rugby fan, Ieuan Roden, at Murrayfield last weekend.

For a while the young Burgh P7 player escorted Scotland star, Simon Taylor, out onto the hallowed turf he secretly hoped Wales might win.

Ieuan’s parents were born in Pontypool, so when he was one of the youngsters picked to be a Scotland mascot for their Six Nations match against Wales, he was utterly thrilled to be meeting ALL of his idols – Welsh and Scottish.

The 11-year-old John Logie Baird pupil told Sport Scene: “Before the match, there was a competition for an autographed ball but I didn’t win.

"With 20 minutes until kick-off, I was feeling a little nervous.

“But that changed to excitement in the tunnel where I met Gareth Edwards and Ray Gravell and got their autographs.”
