Many people will have decided which way they will be voting, while others will still be wrestling with what side of the debate they agree with.

One of Scotland’s most prominent actors is hoping to capture the mood of the moment in a one-man play he’s bringing to Helensburgh next month.

David Hayman — star of hit TV series Trial and Retribution and films such as The Boy With The Striped Pyjamas — is currently performing The Pitiless Storm at the Edinburgh Festival.

The 66-year-old plays a died-to-the-wool Labour supporter who on the eve of the referendum is overcome by a crisis of loyalties.

Speaking during a break from his performances at the Assembly Rooms, the veteran actor told the Advertiser: “I wanted to portray the sort of man who’s a hardline Labour supporter, a trade union member, and has been all his life — but has gone to being a Yes voter. The voices from his past all help him change his mind.

“The first part of the play is him preparing an acceptance speech for an OBE and the final part is the speech itself.

“I’d come up with the idea for the play and approached Chris Dolan to write it, who did a fantastic job, and we worked on it over the winter.” The Pitiless Storm is running in Edinburgh till Sunday, August 24 before coming to the Victoria Halls on Friday, September 5.

And its star says the topical nature of the subject matter is helping to make the play a big hit at the festival. He continued: “There are two plays about independence including mine on at the Assembly Rooms and they’re both doing the best business.

“This is something that’s relevant and topical to people, and it’s a brilliant piece of theatre.

“Even staunch No voters can come along and enjoy the play — it’s moving, powerful, it’s live and breathing before you.” You can buy tickets for the performance at the Victoria Halls box office or from www.fairplay.com.
