FASLANE has welcomed a new naval base commander - who will turn plans for the transformation of the base into reality.

Commodore Mike Wareham, originally from Solihull in the West Midlands, is moving to Helensburgh, where he has lived before.

The 46-year-old relieves Commodore Chris Hockley, who has prepared much of the groundwork for the transformation of the Clyde base.

Commodore Wareham will oversee the plans, including an expansion that could see the creation of as many as 3,000 jobs, the arrival of six more Astute Class attack submarines, the creation of the home base for all 11 of Britain's planned submarine fleet and the establishment of the single training centre for submariners in the UK.

He said: "Part of my job will be to ensure that we can offer our sailors and their families the best possible support here, in a fantastic part of Scotland.

"One of my key roles, of course, will be to ensure that the base provides the Royal Navy with the best possible service from what is the biggest military establishment in Scotland.

"And I am acutely aware of our very close links with the local community which I look forward to maintaining and developing further in the future." READ THE FULL STORY IN THIS WEEK'S ADVERTISER
