THE council's failure to take down road signs on a Helensburgh road has resulted in two residents being slapped with a fine and licence penalty points.

An order removing the one-way restriction on Kenilworth Road which runs into Talisman Crescent, near the old Hermitage Academy, was lifted last month and many residents have been driving up and down it since.

But the council did not remove 'no entry' signs at the entrance to the road - meaning that it was still legally one-way.

Two furious motorists were caught out by police recently and were given a £60 fine, as well as three penalty points.

One resident who had been caught out said: "There was a notice in the Advertiser a few weeks back saying that Kenilworth Avenue would be made into a two-way road and I've been speaking to other residents who say it was made a two-way road from April 22.

"I drove down the street this morning and a police car came up behind me.

"I think it's a bit unfair." Councillor Ellen Morton says there has been a lack of communication between the council and the police, and has been in touch with council officers instructing them to remove the road signs immediately.

Chief Inspector Fergus Byrne, of Helensburgh Police, said: "Mandatory road signs such as no entry signs are there to be obeyed and any drivers ignoring them face the possibility of police action which could result in the issue of a fixed penalty ticket.

"All drivers are urged, in the interests of their safety and that of other road users, to comply with mandatory traffic signage at all times." READ THE FULL STORY IN THIS WEEK'S ADVERTISER
