As things stand, by 2020, Faslane will become the home port for all Royal Navy submarines and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) are now putting plans in place to accommodate for the extra personnel.

The 156 new units will be based within the existing Neptune village area which provides living accommodation for military personnel serving at the naval base.

The application submitted by Carillion PLC is considered a ‘major application’ by Argyll and Bute Council.

The proposed accommodation block will match the existing Neptune blocks in terms of height, scale, architectural design, colour and function, according the planning application.

New blocks will be positioned to face each main street to strengthen the ‘village’ concept of the area, and will comprise of three wings arranged around a central core element.

A spokesman for the Royal Navy confirmed the plans. He told the Advertiser: “Clyde will become the sole operating base for all Royal Navy submarines by 2020, so the Single Living Accommodation units are in line with these plans.” Before submitting the proposals Carillion hosted a public information day to showcase the plans, and provide comment if necessary – in line with statutory guidelines for any major planning application.

The meeting was held on Wednesday, June 11 between 12-8pm at the site offices of Carillion in Hamilton, but despite the public and elected members being invited, no one attended.

Three local community councils, Rhu and Shandon, Rosneath and Clynder, and Garelochhead were notified of the proposals and the public meeting as were Councillors George Freeman, Maurice Corry, Robert G MacIntyre, Gary Mulvaney, James Robb, Vivien Dance, and Aileen Morton.
