An internal investigation is now being carried out after the boss was allegedly caught sleeping on the Valiant Jetty at the Clyde Naval Base.

The Valiant Jetty came into operation last year and is used as a berth for the nuclear submarines, and is also where any maintenance work is carried out on the fleet.

A spokeswoman for Babcock told the Advertiser: “We can confirm that a member of our support team has been suspended. We can make no further comment as the case is currently subject to an internal investigation.” The Ministry of Defence has issued a statement to the Advertiser to highlight that safety is taken seriously at Faslane.

An MOD spokesman said: “HM Naval Base Clyde takes safety extremely seriously and the safe operation of the Naval Base is always our top priority.” The news comes less than a month after the Advertiser reported over 300 nuclear safety accidents have taken place at the Clyde Naval Base in the past five years.

Between 2008 and 2013 a total of 316 ‘nuclear safety events’ and 71 fires were recorded at HM Naval Base Clyde. In addition, 59 incidents were reported in 2011/12, compared with 69 in 2012/13, according to figures obtained by a national newspaper through freedom of information legislation.
