HELENSBURGH Taekwondo instructor Steven McLaren and his student Chelsea Young were recently invited to mix it with the best in the country and pay a visit to the GB Taekwondo headquarters in Manchester.

The pair were shown what it takes for a student to be picked for the 2028 Olympic team and Chelsea was allowed to try out for selections.

Chelsea, who travels from Dumfries to train with Steven McLaren, won her first fight when her opponent was unable to continue after receiving a kick in the second round.

In the second fight Chelsea was up against a 20-time world kickboxing champion, but only lost out narrowly on points in a 25-23 defeat.

The duo were given a talk by the GB coaches on their journey and the challenges they faced before reaching the highest level.

Steven McLaren said: "I was very proud of Chelsea's performance and it was a great insight for us both as to how things are done at the top of the sport, the facilities were brilliant,

"We were very happy with the weekends training and hope to repeat it again in the future."
