The manager of a Rhu football team has opened up about his “love for the club” ahead of a special legends tribute match.

Rhu Amateur Football Club have turned their match against Motherwell Amateur Football Club for the first round of the Scottish Amateur Cup on Saturday, October 14 into a legends and ex-players day where former team members, coaches and their families will be invited to watch.

Manager of the Caledonian 1st team, Gordon Brodie, played with the team for most of his life – starting with them when he was just a toddler.

Gordon’s connection with the club inspired him to create the legends day as he hopes to honour former players and foster the same appreciation for the club within newer players.

He said: “Having been associated with the club for so long we realise what a big part the Rhu is for ex-players, managers, committee, friends and family.

“That's why we want to pay tribute to all the people who have had the pleasure of being associated with the Rhu.

“We also want the current group of players to take on board what it means to play for the club and take pride in what it represents.

“Saturday will be about celebrating the legends of the Rhu and also to remember those that are no longer with us.

“For me the club is not only a huge part of my life but also my families.

“I have been going to the Rhu since I could walk, and I've just turned 40.

“I want the current and upcoming players to have the love for the club that not only I have but for a great deal of other people that have represented and currently represent the club.”

Gordon hopes that he can make this legends day an annual event to continue to show appreciation for the club and its legacy.

Rhu Amateur Football Club currently have two teams – Gordon’s Caledonian 1st team and Rhu Colts who are managed by Jamie Kjorstadt.

Rhu is one of the oldest amateur clubs in Scotland and was founded in 1896 with their biggest achievement coming when they won the Scottish Amateur Cup in 1967.
