A Helensburgh runner has finished in the top set during a national competition last weekend after a “very promising” performance.

Emily Carroll, running for the Scottish West District team, finished 21st out of 310 in the Nottingham held UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championship’s Senior Women’s race on Saturday, March 9.

With a personal best of 35.02, the organisers of Helensburgh’s Babcock 10K are hoping to encourage Emily to run in this year’s event.

A spokesperson for the Babcock 10K said: “Helensburgh’s Emily Carroll, running for the Scottish West District team in Nottingham finished a very promising 21st in the Senior Women’s race.

“Organisers hope to persuade her to return to her hometown for the Babcock Helensburgh 10K on Thursday, May 30.

“Emily has recently improved her personal best for 10K to 35.02 so she may well press last year’s winner Sophie Canty.”

The Helensburgh race will take place on Thursday, May 30 at 7.30pm and is one of three events in the series.

The annual series will kick off with the Shettleston 10K and 2K Family Fun Run on Sunday, May 12 at 10am while the Dumbarton 10K will be held on Thursday, May 23 at 7.30pm.

More than 1,100 runners have already entered the Babcock 10K Series with almost 150 entries from HMNB Clyde, including runners from Babcock, Royal Navy, and the MoD.

In addition to the unique finisher’s medal, runners will receive Start Fitness vouchers, merchandise, a beanie hat at Shettleston, running socks at Dumbarton, and a bandana at Helensburgh.

All series entrants will also receive a specially designed Babcock 10K Series t-shirt.
