TEN local primary schools turned out on Monday, May 11 to compete in a Christian Aid Football tournament at Hermitage Academy.

The teams were competing for the Martha Murdoch Cup and Cardross were defending their title. However, having won the Active Schools Cup earlier in the season, Colgrain were among the pre-tournament favourites.

All the teams put on a great show and the spectators saw lots of competitive games. Rhu won Section A when they beat Cardross 2-1 to knock Cardross into second place in the group.

Colgrain won Section B followed by Hermitage who finished in second place.

The closest games of the night were the two semi-finals which saw Rhu come through against Hermitage, notching a 3-2 win, with a very determined Rhu team holding on under intense pressure from Hermitage who struck the woodwork six times.

In the other semi-final it was Cardross who produced the shock result of the night knocking out Colgrain by the same scoreline. Sean Haughey'’s 30-yard drive for Colgrain couldn'’t deny Cardross the victory on the night.

In the final, Cadross man marked the tournament'’s top scorer Ian Fulton out of the game. Cardross punished Rhu with several delightful moves and eventually ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Player of the Tournament Nicol Gray of Cardross fired two goals in the final.

Ardencaple Chairman Craig Holborn thanked Active Schools Co-ordinator Martin Caldwell, Karl Johansson, Andy Black, Rhys Williams, Clive Charters, Euan Birss and the Christian Aid Committee for their hard work in arranging and running in the tournament.

Thanks to Martin O’Brien-Barden for taking photographs on the night.
