LOMOND school were in hockey action on Saturday with three teams facing up against St. Columba’s.

The teams playing were; S2 A, S3 A and the S4s.

The first match involved the S4s, captained by Katie McGlinchey.

Lomond took a while to get into their rhythm, but it didn’t take long before they were implementing set plays and linking up front.

However St Columba’s converted early in the second half which meant Lomond were put under pressure.

The opportunities and possession were in Lomond’s favour, however, time was not, resulting in a 0–1 loss.

Credit for her strength in tackles and high work ethic must go to Caitlin Rowan.

Next up was the S2 A team, captained by Cara Malcolm.

The players were eager to get out and prove themselves after some unlucky results recently.

Lomond started strongly, with two shots on goal in the first five minutes.

They continued to maintain most of the possession in the first half and were soon given a well-deserved half time break.

In the early minutes of the second half, St Columba’s got a break away and slotted a goal in the bottom left hand corner.

Lomond worked hard to level the score up with shots from all angles of the circle, but their goalie was not letting anything past her.

The full time whistle went and the girls were unlucky to come away with a 0–1 loss. Stand out player Olivia Gillespe came off the pitch with little energy left.

Lastly was the S3 A team captained by Jennifer Bell who started well with some great linking up front from right striker, Rona Wilson and centre mid, Mackenzie Serpell.

St Columba’s, however, took advantage of their counter attack and were able to score four goals in the first half.

Lomond did not let this get to them and converted on the half time whistle with a great goal from a short corner by Lili Qureshi.

The girls controlled the second half with majority of the possession, however St Columba’s converted again on their counter attack making their goal tally seven.

Rona Wilson, who was named player of the match, doubled Lomond’s goal tally after a great goal from the top of the circle.

A great effort from all the players who were involved in playing hockey on Saturday morning.

RUGBY Lomond Helensburgh vs Carrick Academy Under-18 THE senior team stayed at home this weekend and were rewarded with a beautiful morning at Ardencaple. The home side opened the scores after the first quarter with a well worked try by Josh Green. This was followed by more pressure resulting in a blind side try by winger Max Dobbie. With Lomond and Helensburgh seeing the lion’s share of the ball it took a yellow card for Jamie Higgins to spark Carrick into action and they took full advantage of a man advantage to score twice before the end of the half. Half time score 12–12.

With Carrick now in the ascendancy they started to use the ball wide, moving the L and H forwards around the pitch and it was not long till they scored the first of their three tries in the second half. A Kyle Stevenson try and conversion nudged the hosts narrowly into the lead mid-way through the half. However Lomond and Helensburgh’s lack of ability to carry out the basic skills and look after their own ball, compounded by injuries and players having to play out of position, saw Carrick pulled away with two tries in quick succession. A consolation try by Mark Ashdown on the final whistle was not enough to overturn the deficit.

Under-16 THE under-16s faced a strong but unorganised Carrick team. From kick off Lomond and Helensburgh started well, with the first try being scored with in a minute. A fluid home back line created many chances and they were winning comfortably by half time. Carrick managed to claw one try back early in the second half however, Lomond and Helensburgh eased to victory, with the final score 80-7. Try scorers included Matthew Holland, Callum Alcorn and Erik Halvorson.

Under-15 THIS game started with 13 players on both sides, Lomond and Helensburgh fielding two new players in Nick & Connor. Carrick attacked from the kick off but strong tackling from the home side resulted in a turnover and this then lead to quick ruck ball from the forwards which allowed Woodward to score under the posts. This hard work at the tackle area and strong direct running allowed MacDougal, Woodward , McLaren & Strickler to score whilst not conceding any points. It was a similar story in the second half: with Chown, Woodward , MacDougal and Strickler scoring., making it Lomod and Helensburgh 60-0 Carrick.

S2 LOMOND and Helensburgh S2s travelled down to play 12-a-side against a depleted Carrick Academy S2s at Rozelle Park. Right from the kick-off, Lomond and Helensburgh open up strongly with Angus Guy scoring three tries within the first 10 minutes. Carrick came back using penalty restarts to repeatedly attack up the middle and force over for their first score. Three further tries by the away side were again answered by Carrick on the half-time whistle to make the score 23-8.

Carrick turned the tables by scoring immediately from the restart, but Lomond and Helensburgh again dominated throughout the second half. Breakaway runs from deep by both Angus and Adam Scott were then followed by a beautifully executed back move. With first Joe Bull fixing two defenders, then Angus and Charlie Barton doing the same before passing, left Ben Farrar on the wing to put on the gas, running 50 metres and scoring under the posts. With two more tries by Angus and then Charlie scoring under the post, the ref called time with Conn Mundie kicking his 10th conversion. Final score 46-12.

The S1 team had a convincing 23-11 away win against Carrick academy on Saturday. In a scrappy match, which saw both teams struggling to gain control for consecutive phases. The better running skills of Lomond and Helensburgh paid off with three tries from Cameron Murray, 1 each for Douglas King, Fraser Cashmore and Josh Wells. Josh wells kicked well and managed five out of six conversions.
