TIRELESS pupils at Garelochhead Primary have been fund-raising, script writing and poetry reading recently.

A busy start to the year has seen the children raise over £1,000 for school funds and the tsunami appeal, get expert advice from a professional script writer and take part in the Burns Federation Competition.

The school’s recent non-uniform day meant pupils collected £215.15 for victims of the Boxing Day disaster in Asia, with some kind-hearted kids donating their own pocket money and selling tablet to raise cash.

A fantastic £1,064.69 was donated by visitors to the primary’s annual scholastic book fair with profits going to buy brand-new library resources for every classroom.

Pupils then took the words of our national poet to heart with a poetry and singing competition in honour of Robert Burns.

Award winning script writers of the future were then given the chance to shine and put their skills to the test. Primary 6/7 were visited by Jim McCreadie, a script writer for BBC Scotland’s River City, to help them develop dialogue and characterisation in their work.

Headteacher Laura Freeland said: “The children have been involved in lots of different events and we were proud of how the school community supported us, especially in the scholastic book fair which once again was particularly successful.

“The script writing was an exciting new event and the children have benefited from the visits that Mr McCreadie made to the class.”
