THE Morrisons supermarket chain says that more than 150 jobs will be created when it opens its new store in Helensburgh.

A recruitment campaign for the new roles will launch next week.

But the company still hasn't revealed precisely when the Cardross Road supermarket might open to the public – saying only that it will be "towards the end this year".

The Bradford-based company announced in March that it had bought the site – formerly home to the town's Waitrose supermarket, which closed in May with the loss of 88 jobs.

Thursday's announcement comes after the town's MSP, Jackie Baillie, said she believed local shoppers would be disappointed at the company's silence on an opening date for the store.

Morrisons says it will be seeking people for a variety of roles including team leaders, customer assistants, skilled butchers and fishmongers.

Its recruitment campaign will begin on Monday, August 31 at its website and at a recruitment centre in Helensburgh.

The company said in a statement: "There are over 150 roles available at Cardross Road store which will open towards the end of this year following an extensive refurbishment of the former Waitrose building."

Scott Byers, the newly-appointed store manager, said: “I’m really looking forward to starting the recruitment process and building an enthusiastic team ready to serve the Helensburgh community.”

Anyone interested in a role can apply via www.morrisons.jobs or visit the recruitment center at 7 Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh from August 31.
