PEOPLE in Helensburgh are being encouraged to join a memory walk this month in support of a local charity which helps people suffering with cancer.

The fund-raiser has been organised by Kelly Andrews, who set up the Gary Andrews Remember A Life charity in 2018 in memory of her late husband.

Gary, from Garelochhead, passed away at the age of 40 in 2013 having been diagnosed with lung cancer, and Kelly is keen to mark what would have been his 48th birthday next Friday, April 23, by walking 48 miles during April.

She told the Advertiser: “Anyone is welcome to take part by even just going a walk or making a donation.

“I would like to thank everyone that’s taking part and for their ongoing support to the charity.

“There has been a fantastic response from the kids who are at Hermitage Academy with my son, and it’s very touching how they’ve been walking and supporting him.”

Another member of the community taking part is Ardencaple FC chairman, and friend of Kelly’s, Craig Holborn, who will be raising money for the local club and for the charity.

He said: “Kelly knows first hand just how difficult it is to lose a loved one and dedicates a tremendous amount of time and energy in helping local folks when they need it most.

“Kelly really does make a meaningful difference - with an end of life wish or a little donation to the lives of people diagnosed with cancer or incurable diseases, helping them to make big memories or simply helping them lead their daily lives by taking away some of their stress.

“Gary would have turned 48 on April 23 so I am going to walk 48 miles in what is left of this month to help raise awareness and money for the charity, as well as bolster Caple’s club funds.

“All funds raised shall be divided equally between these two great causes. So, please give whatever you can afford, your donations are very much appreciated and will be put to great use.”

Craig added: “As chairman I am clearly biased but what a truly wonderful community club we are.

“We look forward to embracing our ‘new normal’ and to getting hundreds of kids - and their parents - active again.

“Whilst every penny is a prisoner, we never lose sight of other worthy causes and try to support them whenever we can.”

Anyone taking part in the memory walk is asked to use the hashtag #milesforgary and upload their photos on social media.

To add a donation to the charity’s bank account, use the sort code: 80-22-60 and account number: 19708964.
