A HELENSBURGH cycling event which had to be cancelled last summer because of Covid restrictions is all set to hit the road again later this month.

The Helensburgh Sportive event sees cyclists from all over Scotland gather in the area to take in the stunning views of the Clyde, Gareloch and Loch Long all while raising money for charity. The event has already raised around £2,000, and is looking to reach its goal of £5,000.

Organiser Sam Flatman told the Advertiser: “We’ve got about 100 entries, and the maximum is 200, so we’re halfway there.

“We’ll be starting with eight waves of around 10 people. It’s not a ranked thing but we do publish the times so people get a wee bit competitive.

“We’ve got a good few friends who are road cyclists, so the competition’s already started amongst them.

“We’ve chosen Beatson from a family point of view. It’s a cause close to our hearts, and they’ve struggled through the pandemic, so it’ll be nice to help them.

“It’s always a really good atmosphere on the day. It’s been missed. Fitness goals are important, but it’ll be good to see everyone out having fun.”

Registration on the day opens at 7.30am, with riders setting off in waves between 8am and 10am.

The route begins at Helensburgh Sailing Club, where toilet facilities will be available - though showers and changing facilities will not.

The clubhouse bar will be open for drinks, with card payment only.

There will also be a food station in Glen Fruin, approximately 20 miles into the course, with water, snacks and a portaloo available.

The route itself will include a total ascent of 3,113 feet - 950 metres - so it’s not one for the faint-hearted.

“It was a bit rubbish cancelling last year,” Sam continued.

“We originally tried to run it in June but had to postpone to September, then lockdown happened so we decided it just wasn’t going to happen.

“It should make this year’s one more exciting.Everyone is keen to get involved.

“Cycling has become popular over lockdown and we’re major advocates of getting everyone outside and exercising.

“Just the general buzz of the day and seeing everyone out having fun and raising money for charity will be really cool.

“Last time we raised £5,000 so if we got close to that again it would be great.”

A Beatson spokesperson said: “We want to thank everyone taking part in organising this event. Helensburgh Sportive’s contribution makes a massive difference.

“With this support we are able to fund a wealth of medical experts and continue our services to cancer patients and their families.

“We wish all the riders good luck on their challenge - through blood, sweat and giant blisters and of course 50 miles of stunning scenery!”

The Helensburgh Sportive Event will run on Sunday, July 18; entries close on July 14.
