YOUNG Scouts in Rhu are celebrating a significant funding boost courtesy of a local supermarket.

A £5,500 cheque was presented to members and adult leaders from the 1st Rhu Scout Group recently thanks to the Morrisons Foundation.

Alison Sturgeon, the community champion for Morrisons’ Helensburgh store in Cardross Road, said she was “thrilled” to hand over the money, along with a donation of fish for the Scouts to gut and cook over an open fire.

The Scout group has been providing activities for around 100 young people aged between six and 18 years old in the local area for more than 90 years.

Dr James Harrison, leader of the 1st Rhu Scouts, told the Advertiser: “Although the Scout hut has been recently rebuilt, the grounds need substantial work to bring them up to a standard that allows us to deliver safe and exciting scout activities.

“The £5,500 grant from the Morrisons Foundation will enable us to fence the site, improve access for both disabled and able bodied users, improve storage for outdoor equipment, build a permanent den structure and provide large poles for pioneering style activities.

“All of this work will maximise our ability to use the outdoor space and to provide an exciting programme which teaches traditional scouting skills, encourages team work, leadership and self development and provides skills for life in all the young people.

“We are grateful to Morrisons in helping us to realise our vision to give the young people of Rhu the best opportunity to grow, develop and learn these vital skills.”
