Drivers have been urged to slow down at a major intersection in Helensburgh amid ongoing concerns over speeding vehicles.

Police have responded to public concerns with speeding and driving through red lights near Hermitage Academy.

The issue has been raised before, with residents claiming some drivers are hitting speeds well above the 30mph limit on Cardross Road on the stretch outside the school and the Morrison's supermarket.

The subject was raised again at Helensburgh Community Council's latest meeting on February 29.

Chief Inspector Allan Dickson told the Advertiser: "We have been made aware of recent incidents of speeding and inconsiderate driving around Hermitage Academy.

"We would urge drivers to slow their speed and pay more particular attention to their manner of driving around the school and what is a busy crossing to the nearby shop.

"We have been contacted by an elected member with regards the issue and it was also raised by the local community council.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

"As ever we will work closely with partners to look at any preventive measures that can be put in place.

"We will also have more of a police presence in and around the area during busier times for enforcement and so that we may better understand the scale of the issue.

"Our youth engagement officer has already been made aware of the problem and has been active outside the school in the past week.

"Should you witness speeding in the area we would urge you to report it at the time to police on 101.”

Last summer, a resident living near the school said they were "increasingly concerned and frustrated" by the number of drivers ignoring the speed limit on the dual carriageway.

“Someone is going to be hurt soon and I see this on a daily basis," they said.
