POLICE have begun cracking down on bad driving near a school where residents reported problems with speeding and other offences.

Concerns were raised at Helensburgh Community Council about bad driving on the A814 near Hermitage Academy and officers appealed for motorists to cut their speed and consider their behaviour.

As the Advertiser reported the worries of residents, Police Scotland said they would increase patrols.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

In a social media post, they confirmed they were out doing speed checks of drivers.

They wrote: "Following reports of speeding on the A814 close to Hermitage Academy in Helesnburgh, our officers were out this morning caring out speed checks in the area.

"If you don't want a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence, don't speed. Its simple and makes your community a safer place."

In a statement to the Advertiser this week, Chief Inspector Allan Dickson said: "We have been made aware of recent incidents of speeding and inconsiderate driving around Hermitage Academy.

"We would urge drivers to slow their speed and pay more particular attention to their manner of driving around the school and what is a busy crossing to the nearby shop.

"We have been contacted by an elected member with regards the issue and it was also raised by the local community council.

"As ever we will work closely with partners to look at any preventive measures that can be put in place.

"We will also have more of a police presence in and around the area during busier times for enforcement and so that we may better understand the scale of the issue.

"Our youth engagement officer has already been made aware of the problem and has been active outside the school in the past week.

"Should you witness speeding in the area we would urge you to report it at the time to police on 101.”
