Amazing footage of a humpback whale breaching in the Clyde was captured at the weekend.

Dawn Petherick was on board the vessel when the magical moment occurred in Loch Long.

She said: "It was a very lucky day for me, starting with the alerts which I almost missed and then the synchronicity of being invited out on the boat just one of those days when everything fell into place!"

Watch the incredible footage below.

Humpback sightings on the Clyde are rare, though the Queen's Harbourmaster Clyde had to issue an alert to mariners in July 2022 after a humpback was reported to have been seen in Loch Goil.

And in the autumn of 2020 a pod of northern bottlenose whales made its way into the Gare Loch, attracting big crowds keen to see the amazing animals -and sparking a large-scale rescue operation in a bid to persuade the mammals to return to the open water.

However, the 2020 visit ended in sadness when one was later found dead.

Dawn added that she would like to thank Jason Coles and Dunnon-based scuba tour company Wreckspeditions, without whom she woudn't have been out on the water in the first place to capture the marvellous moment.

Dr Philip Cowie from the University of the West of Scotland previously said: "Humpback whale can be found in all of the worlds oceans and undergo amazing migrations.

"They spend the winter months in the tropics and subtropics breeding, and summer months in temperate and colder waters feeding. They are large baleen whales measuring between 12-16 metres, and can weigh up to 38 tonnes.

"So why have we been seeing them in the Clyde for the last few years? From the video footage and photographs people have sent in, and my own luck in watching one of the whales for a few hours, it is apparent that the whale/whales are feeding in a variety of different ways during these sightings."
